Transportation
The DAV Transportation Network of Maryland was established to ensure that every veteran has access to their medical benefits. With support from the VA Voluntary Service (VAVS), we provide free transportation for veterans to VA hospitals, medical facilities, and clinics. All vehicles are acquired through our partnership with Ford Motor Corporation.
Our life-changing operation wouldn’t be possible without vital help from our fleet of volunteer drivers. These volunteers make a positive impact on the lives of local veterans and ensure they receive the medical attention they need. Volunteer drivers and Hospital Service Coordinators (HSCs) are considered “without compensation employees” within the VA when they are performing their assignments and the following conditions have been met:
- completed and signed a volunteer application
- attended a mandatory volunteer orientation
- completed assignment specific training for volunteer drivers
- completed driver safety training
- possess a valid driver’s license
- provided proof of current automobile insurance
- passed a physical examination
During the 2019 fiscal year, the DAV Transportation Network of Maryland helped 9,136 veterans and drove for a total of 17,750 hours and 178,421 miles.
